Second vote for this one.
A heartbeat monitored through a special port, the loss of which, forces the
on-the-fly changing of MAC addresses (so that local routers don't spot the
change) and ip addresses, is something I've seen in the Solaris world. This
is the kind of thing the corporate market is looking for as an answer to the
unattended solution to the single point of failure question.
If you have 24/7 human presence, having a second system to put the right
floppy into & press reset is also quite a convincing approach as well. (and
probably cheaper, if the staff are already there)
